ExhibitionsA Man Made of Dust

For more than a decade, Kokoska has developed a singular visual language, constructing strange and psychologically charged worlds where the familiar is made uncanny. His work has long been preoccupied with the face and the figure—mask-like characters, ambiguous bodies, symbols, and decorative motifs that hover between portraiture and invention. In his paintings, identity is never entirely fixed. Figures appear simultaneously vulnerable and impenetrable, familiar and fantastical, caught somewhere between the personal and the mythological.

A Man Made of Dust extends these concerns into a landscape shaped by memory, mortality, and the unstable boundary between the human and the natural world. Kokoska’s recent paintings draw from observation and lived experience, musing upon the remembered. Rural landscapes become psychological spaces. Spaces familiar enough to recognize, yet charged with an atmosphere that suggests something has happened—or is about to. The figures inhabiting them seem less involved in conventional narrative than fragments of memory, folklore, and dream.

The exhibition title A Man Made of Dust evokes the elemental nature of the work. Dust as both matter and metaphor: the substance from which the human body is made and the substance to which it ultimately returns. Kokoska considers the body as something porous and temporary, embedded within larger cycles of nature, memory, desire, and decay. His landscapes are not passive backdrops but active participants, places where the psychological and physical worlds overlap.

The artist has described his process as one without a predetermined conclusion: faces, symbols, and imagery are repeatedly painted over, altered, and allowed to evolve until something unexpected emerges. This openness to transformation is central to the work. Rather than illustrating a fixed story, Kokoska allows his paintings to accumulate associations, creating images that feel as though they have surfaced from somewhere between memory and invention.
